His pleas for help went viral overnight, but it all turned out to be a hoax.

WCPO reports that at about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, Cincinnati man Adam Hoover, 20, began sending messages and posts out on Twitter and Facebook saying he’d been stuffed in the trunk of his car and kidnapped.

He said the group who put him there said they would kill him and his family.

The messages spread online, and hashtag #FindAdamHoover quickly spread all over the world as Internet users tried to help.

Police eventually found Hoover’s vehicle abandoned on a road in Miami Township. He was found nearby.
